On gray and dreary days, we like to make ourselves comfortable at home. A warming cup of tea and a cozy blanket create a feeling of well-being. Especially at this time of year, when it gets light late and dark early, fairy lights add a magical atmosphere.
Besides the classic Christmas tree lights, there are now many alternatives. Small, battery-operated lights are particularly well-suited for indoor decoration. These offer more placement options since they don’t require a power outlet. Wire lights are perfect for creative decorations, as the flexible wire allows for individual designs.
Available in various lengths and with a wide range of designs, these string lights offer something for everyone. From classic bulbs to versions with snowflakes, stars, baubles, or leaves – in silver, gold, or with green wire for Christmas arrangements. This extensive selection is currently available not only in home furnishing and decoration stores, but also in hardware stores, drugstores, and supermarkets.

Discover the versatile possibilities of lighting design, offering numerous ways to create a unique atmosphere. The following examples are not only meant to be copied, but above all to inspire you to express your creativity and develop your own ideas.
Winter magic in the lantern
Materials needed:
- Lantern, height approx. 50 cm
- Battery-operated string lights with 20 LEDs made of wire
- A large decorative fir tree, 28 cm high (e.g. available in hardware stores or drugstores)
- Christmas figurine such as deer, stag, Santa Claus, angel, etc., approx. 16 cm tall
- Two small Christmas tree baubles, 3 cm in diameter
- Small pine cone pendants, approx. 5 cm long
- Adhesive tape (preferably gaffer tape)
- Transparent nylon thread
Here’s how it’s done:
Secure the battery compartment of the string lights to the inside of the lantern lid with duct tape. Wrap the string lights loosely around the tree and arrange the remaining part loosely inside the lantern. Place cotton wool underneath and then arrange the tree and decorative figure on top. Tie a piece of nylon thread to each Christmas ornament and join the threads together at the top. Secure the ornaments to the inside of the lantern roof with a small strip of tape. Optionally, scatter pine cones or additional Christmas ornaments on the snow. Turn on the lights, close the door, and the atmosphere is perfect.
Magical light in the glass
With just a few everyday items, you can create a fabulous Christmas decoration in no time. Simply fill a large glass jar with Christmas baubles of different sizes and a string of lights – and you have a simple yet effective Christmas decoration.
Materials needed:
- A large glass jar with a lid, approximately 20 cm high and 15 cm wide.
- Battery-operated string lights with 20 LEDs made of wire with motifs such as stars
- Christmas tree baubles in various sizes
- Adhesive tape (preferably gaffer tape)
Here’s how it’s done:
Attach the battery compartment of the string lights to the lid with a piece of gaffer tape. Feed the other end of the string lights into the glass and place it surrounded by Christmas baubles. Finally, switch on the string lights, close the lid, and enjoy the magic.
Double the charm:
fairy lights and candle in harmonious accord
To give the Christmas arrangement even more radiance, a string of lights is wrapped around the wreath in addition to the candle. Lights with small motifs are particularly suitable here. Alternatively, you can choose a classic LED model and embellish the wreath with some Christmas decorations.
Materials needed:
- a bowl with a 20 cm diameter
- Battery-operated string lights with 20 LEDs made of wire, with or without a motif
- a wreath with a 20 cm diameter
- a candle with a 9 cm diameter
- some paper (e.g. newspaper)
Here’s how it’s done:
If needed, the bowl can be filled with some paper to raise the candle. The end of the string lights with the battery compartment is loosely placed on the wreath, and the wire is then wrapped around it several times. Next, the wreath is placed on the bowl, with the battery compartment tucked underneath. Finally, the candle is inserted into the wreath. To switch on the string lights, simply lift the wreath slightly.
Tip: You can also create an atmospheric Advent wreath using four elegant taper candles instead of one pillar candle.
